The Story of Dunbar is not one story but many. This homegrown history of a distinctive Vancouver neighbourhood draws on interviews with more than 350 local residents, including both recent arrivals and descendants of pioneers. Their personal accounts are augmented by information from numerous archival and published sources. From early settlement and industry to the area's commercial development, from the first schools to the last streetcars, from tent homes to castle houses, this volume brimming with historical photographs celebrates community roots and a sense of place.

The "Documenting Dunbar" project was carried out under the leadership of community activist and Dunbar Residents' Association president Peggy Shofield. After Peggy's untimely death in 2005, the committee pulled together to complete the project in her memory. Contributing writers, all local residents, are Pam Chambers, Vivien Clarke, Shelagh Lindsey, Beryl March, Angus McIntyre, Larry Moore, Margaret Moore, Peggy Schofield, Helen Spiegelman and Joan Tyldesley.
