The Black SpotHi Tom:
I see you have added some videos on the Dunbar area and wonder if you might be interested in a slideshow I have done on the Black Spot. As you may remember it was a big deal in our last year in school and its original success was largely the result of the support of the school students. The slideshow pictures are from 1960-61 and it is about 5 minutes with jazz music of the time. By that time the club was owned by four former students of Byng. Tom Killan, Morris Jenkins, class of 56, Ron Dobson and myself, class of 59. In the video you will see a young Terry Clarke, Ken Clarke's brother, playing the drums and the only jazz drummer to receive the Order of Canada. Al Wiertz, Ron Dobson's cousin, who attented Byng for one year playing the drums. Claire Lawrence playing the sax before he was with the Collectors and Chilliwack. Bill Fawcett playing guitar who later became the principal bass in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra until retired a few years ago.The club had a profound effect on a number of people who played and went there. [John Capon is playing the valve trombone in the video.]
